Why I built it
About two years ago I was building my own SaaS products and needed demo videos for them, so I started using Screen Studio. The auto-zoom on clicks and the smooth cursor made my recordings look like a professional had edited them, which was very much not the case.
The problem was how often I opened it. Once or twice a month. Paying a subscription for that felt ridiculous, so I went looking at the open source alternatives, hoping to get close for free. Nothing came close. The auto-zoom was janky, the cursor tracking was off, and the output looked amateur. That gap, between what I was willing to pay for and what the free tools could actually do, is what got me started instead of just complaining about it.
There was a second reason, and it is the one that was actually costing me hours. I record short clips constantly for work. Reproducing a bug for a teammate. A two-minute walkthrough of a pull request. A quick tutorial for a client. The recording was never the slow part. Everything after it was: opening a separate editor, cutting the dead air, zooming in on the click that mattered, syncing subtitles by hand. A two-minute video regularly turned into thirty or forty minutes of post-production, for something whose whole point was to save time.
So I wrote a weekend script that zoomed in on my click coordinates. Then cursor smoothing. Then AI subtitles, because I kept forgetting to caption my own demos. Then background noise cleanup, because my apartment is not a soundproof booth. Over a few months the script became an app, and the app became KlipKap Pro.
What I chose
Everything runs locally
Recording, editing, transcription, export. KlipKap touches the network twice: to download itself, and to check a licence. You can edit on a plane, and a recording of someone’s account never leaves your laptop.
You pay once
This started because a subscription for something I opened twice a month annoyed me, so charging one myself was never going to happen. The licence covers updates and does not renew. The free tier is not a trial: it records, edits and exports at 720p with a watermark, with no account and no clock running.
One effect I did not expect is that support got quieter. Nobody writes in asking why they were billed for something they forgot they installed. The obvious downside is that there is no recurring revenue, so this only works if new people keep finding it.
Windows and Mac, same build
Both shipped together rather than one of them arriving as a port later. Same features, same project files. It slows everything down, and I still think it is the right trade: a team recording on two different tools produces demos that do not match.
What it does not do
- No sharing. No links, no viewer stats, no team library, no SSO.
- No Linux build. I am working on it, it is not ready, and I would rather say that than list it as coming soon.
- One video track. This is a screen recorder with an editor attached, not Premiere.
- The free tier watermarks its exports. Everything else in the editor is in it.

On Uneed
KlipKap Pro is listed on Uneed, an independent product directory. It came 1st in Product of the Day and 2nd in Product of the Week, both voted by their community. The reviews are there too, where I can neither edit nor remove them.
